# Translation Ayah
1 I swear by this city -- لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ
2 and you are dwelling in this city -- وَأَنتَ حِلٌّ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ
3 and by parent and offspring, وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ
4 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ
5 Does he think then that no one has power over him? أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ
6 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا
7 Does he then think that no one sees him? أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ
8 Have We not given him two eyes, أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُ عَيْنَيْنِ
9 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
10 and shown him the two paths? وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ
11 But he has not attempted the ascent. فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ
12 What will explain to you what the ascent is? وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ
13 It is the freeing of a slave; فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
14 or the feeding in times of famine أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ
15 of an orphaned relative يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
16 or some needy person in distress, أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
17 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ
18 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, أُوْلَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ
19 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ
20 and the Fire will close in on them. عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ
